I get what I gave - DEATH by Kanakrekha

The clatter of approaching footsteps somewhere in the long corridor can be heard –probably my food or good news! The sound grows louder and strange as it may be, in spite of disappointing me for the last eighteen months, it has never failed to evoke hope on any single day - this morning is no exception either.  Probably it is the last time I hear these footsteps, probably today, sixth of May 2010, I will be given a new lease of life.

Hope! A sentiment so dear it may well absorb all disillusions one can live with. It kept an abandoned me, in utterly forlorn surroundings alive in a hostile world.  Each time I hear the footfalls I am hopeful, yet somehow I know there is but a little hope for me. Can I hope to be a free man some day? Can I hope to see my family get the wealth that I was promised. Can I ever even meet them? Can I ever breathe in open air?

While I spend my days which the Indian cops do not tire of telling ,me – are numbered, I have no clue if Abba still sells dahi-vadas to support the family, whether they received any paigham for Surraiya – will she ever receive any after what I am facing here ? Does Afzal Bhai still work as a labourer in Lahore?

Sometimes I am so anxious that I almost evade all the questions. Still – I miss my home my people, I miss Fridkot, miss Okara, my village and miss those carefree days when worrying about the next meal was the only concern. Most of all I miss my misery for it does not even sound like misery now. My life itself is a misery, rather what is left of it - nothing but anxiety and agony.

Home! The sweetest word there can be and home it was I left for a simple concern to wear a new shalwar-kurta for Eid. It does not even sound like a good enough reason anymore to leave home when abba could not provide it.

So give me another chance O God, for I was but innocent and a child and naïve. How could I know what turn my life could take for the want of a new pair of clothing! Naïve to the point of being oblivious of the fact that everything that is not rightfully mine could not become mine by stealing robbing and looting.

But then did not Muzaffar, my dear friend my aziz, say that after all the rich did the same -they stole from the poor. Moreover, it was definitely fun – looting and enjoying the fruits of our labour. It was our hard earned money – these petty crimes steal some money here, some jewellry there and have a good time for days to come – till the next robbery!

Working alongside with Afzal bhai in lahore like a daily wage earning labourer, meant working hard the entire day come rain or shine and at the end of the day a pittance was doled out to us like alms! No, I am sure Muzaffar’s way of life was unquestionably far better in all respects. Besides, how else could a man expect to earn a decent living in my village in Faridkot, where most people have no education and lived in utter poverty all their lives?

The real fun however was working with the arms, the mere show of a country made pistol instilled fear in anyone who resisted and ended in turning up the wealth they had accumulated, depriving us in turn, depriving us -the poor. Armed robbery was quick and yielded far more than we even hoped to!

It was such a chance meet when we were picking up arms at Rawalpindi and I distinctly remember it was on the Bakr Eid day that we came across members of Jama'at-ud-Da'wah, the political wing of Lashkar-e-Taiba, distributing pamphlets. After a brief chat, we decided to sign up for training with the Lashkar-e-Taiba, ending up at their base camp, Markaz Taiba.  Must admit it was a perfect Bakr Eid gift!

We were told that our big brother India is so rich and we are dying of poverty and hunger. My father sells dahi wada on a stall in Lahore and we do not have enough food to eat from his earnings. I was promised that once they knew that I was successful in my operation, they would give Rs 150,000, to my family.

"Go for jihad!      Go for jihad!     Go for Jihad!

What is Jihad? And why is this graffiti pasted all over the camp? I don’t know any verses from the Quran that described jihad, in fact I do not know much about Islam or its tenets,” We were told, it is about killing and getting killed and becoming famous.” Come, kill and die after a killing spree. By this, one will become famous and will make Allah proud! Jihad made sense and it would certainly make my family proud and rich!

I trained with a single-minded devotion to wage a war against India, our selfish neighbour. The commanders at the camp told me that a Jihadi, a Fidayeen Suicide Squad Jihadi  kills to the last breath, he does not get arrested or subjects himself to any interrogation. He would first die in the name of Allah, than give away his identity or even this nationality.

Now, in this lonely cell, I wonder if it was worth it? I keep having visions of ammi as she blessed me success in my holy Jihad, her proud smiling face is what I see when loneliness engulfs me. The excitement on the face of the little boys in village as I demonstrated wrestling skills learnt at the camp.

I knew that it would be a remote possibility to visit home  again but then, each passing day, somehow hope keeps building in – may be - just may be !

And why should I not hold on to hope -this last resort, the only thing that keeps me going from day to day?

Why should I let go of hope, the Indians have even found me a lawyer after the likes of Dinesh Mota, curse on him a criminal lawyer for 24 years, who was asked to appear for me but refused, saying “Mumbai is my family. How can I be Kasav’s lawyer?”

Yet I am hopeful, after all, did I not propose my services to the Indian cops? Did I not made an irresistible offer that if I was assured of regular meals, money and shelter I was ready to do the same for them what I did for the Pak. They could make a good use of my training and skills. There was a chance my prayers could be answered.

So what if the CCTV at the CST showed me laughing after the first burst of bullets hit the unsuspecting unarmed people and they fell all around me crying and yelling for help.

So what if I told the indian cops,  I do not regret anything.

So what if I told them I wanted to replicate the Islamabad Marriot hotel attack and reduce Taj hotel to rubble.

So what if I attacked CST and killed many innocent people – they deserved death.

So what if I executed senior Indian police officres Hemant Karkare and Vijay Salaskar. They deserved to die and what a joke was their bullet proof vests to my ammunition.

So what if I fired at and killed the crowd gathered at the metro cinema, it was indeed very fulfilling to kill the policeman whose cell phone rang at that very moment.

Even though I told them I do not want to die and to put me on saline, later I realised  after interrogation in the hospital by the police, that I wanted them to kill me for the safety of my family in Pakistan who could be killed or tortured for surrendering to the Indian police.

Oh to confess, I could not bear the sight of dead bodies and after creating enough havoc and wanted to go back to Pakistan. But a preordained fate awaited me – the Day of Judgment finally arrives, I hear with bated breath the footsteps stop by. If he was allowed mercy he would have killed me long back or the other policemen for that matter but they have to keep me alive and at what cost!

Whatever the judgment, I know I have done my family, my country and the supreme power the Allah proud! I accept whatever has been decided for me, if Insha-Allah’s I get what I gave – DEATH Ameen !

After long day I've read a beautiful blog. Thanks a lot Kanakji, it is to nice to me. Kasav is a poor terrorist/criminal, murdered lot of innocent people in the name of Jihad, and the operators are enjoying the creams of jihad, which is more dangerous to any country & human beings too. Thanks.

Dear Friends,
I'm agree with u, that Kasaab isn't a criminal by his nature, but what about his activity in 26/11 in the Mumbai & what about thair Boss.I think everyone is devil crinimal who is involved in this.

Today the word Jihaad is used by the illiterate, ignorants religiously intolerant myopic viewed mullahs, clerics and other sycophants, who knew only to kill or get killed in the name of Allah to manipulate and brainwashed young soul.Their deadly modus operandi" Catch them young" have been proved effective and devastating time and again.

It is stated in all books. Reap what you sow.One that takes sword will die of sword. You can not escape from the consequences of your act.No justification for that.Poverty is no excuse.

A lively account of terrorist.
Its a worldwide phenomenon with a concentration in Asia.
Blasts and deaths have become a norm. Sometimes I feel life without these occurrences will be unusual in our country.
An alarming situation cops!!!!!

AS OF NOW HUMAN SPECIES HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO CREATE LIFE AND PRODUCE MAN OR WOMEN LIKE WE ARE NOW LIVING BUT MANKIND HAS MADE FROM THE ELEMENTS KNOWN AND FOUND AND BY USING HIS MIND INTELLIGENCE MADE USE OF IRON TO CREATE INSTRUMENTS TO END LIFE EVEN BEFORE NATURAL DEATH CALLS ON US.

Parmeswaran Thank You for reading my blog for the first time n also for commenting.
You are totally correct it is the terrorist within that has to be tackled too.

But there is no denying that Pak has a huge hang up about India and it will NEVER NEVER leave us alone.
Thence we need to punish the terrorist nation.

Life in Death is more than death. But no one has pointed out the corruption in our country which helped these terrorists to creep in. While the country should be guarded from outside terrorists, it should be guarded from the internal terrorists - the corrupt

ABSOLUTELY ARUNJI. I BELIEVE THRE ARE TWO REASONS FOR THE DELAY
THERE'S MORE TO IT THAN MEETS THE EYE - THE KASAB HANGING IS RELATED TO HEADLY BEING QUESTIONEDND WHAT HE SINGS!

IND GOVT DSNT HAVE THE FANGS IT TAKES TO TACKLE SUCH SITUATIONS.

THESE ARE HI PROFILE POLITICAL CASES, WHAT ABT NITHARI? THE TWO ANIMALS KIDNAPPED, TORTURED, RAPED, ATE AND FINALLY KILLED LITTLE CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS. WHAT STOPS THE JUDICIARY TO SENTENCE AND HANG THEM? BEATS ME :(

Killing a Killer is no sin at all...I wonder that why indian govt is SLEEPING CVER THE MATTER AND NOT HANGING ALL THOSE CRIMINALS TO WHOM DEATH PENALITY HAS BEEN GIVEN...MOREOVER BEING A YOUNG TERRORIST DOSE NOT LESSEN THE QUANTUM OF CRIME..IN MY VIEW THERE SHOULD BE A SQUAD IN OUR POLICE NAMED 'KILLER OF KILLERS' SO THAT JUSTICE CAN BE DONE ON THE SPOT...

HOWEVER SINCE YOU HAVE AN ISSUE ABOUT SUMTHING... PLZ ELABORATE YOURSELF.

KanakJi, The relegion and the words used in it are different than used by wrong followers and the person you are describing is not an ideal for anyone. If you want to know about details for what you asked contact with Firangy Mahal which is in your city.He will give the details.
Posted by: Kanakrekha ChauhanOn: Saturday, May 08, 2010 11:13:17 AM
ISTAFAJI... INSHA ALLAH AND AMEEN ARE TERMS USED MANY A TIMES BY NON MUSLIMS AS WELL. AND SINCE THIS WRITE UP IS WRITTEN AS A BIOGRAPHICAL ACCOUNT - VIS A VIS KASAB - WHAT DO YOU THINK COULD HAVE BEEN A MORE SUITABLE EXPRESSION TO EXPRESS - "GOD'S WISH" AND "AMEEN" AS IN - SO BE IT ?
Posted by: Kanakrekha ChauhanOn: Saturday, May 08, 2010 11:04:43 AM
Istafaji Agree! It was to overcome these doubts and appprehensions that many religious leaders and intellectuals of the Islamic community met and decided to condemn THIS KIND OF JIHAD AND TERRORISM STEMMING OUT OF SUCH MISPLACED SENSE OF RELIGIOUS FERVOUR. THEY RESOVED TO BOYCOTT ALL ORGANISATIONS INVOLVED WITH SUCH ACTIVITY.
It is clear to everyone how young boys and men are used and exploited for the terroists' vested interests.
Posted by: Dr.Istafa AkhterOn: Saturday, May 08, 2010 10:37:33 AM
KanakJi............
Jihad is not the substitute what that people are using.Islam never allow these kinds of actions and Insha Allah and Ammeen is for everyone.
Terrorists are not born but produced. These people are used by some one on the name of relegion for their benefits. And the resions should be summarised to avoid it.

ASHOK IT WAS DIFFICULT TO PUT MYSELF IN HIS SHOES BUT I DID GET A LOTTA HELP FROM THE VARIOUS PRESS RELEASES.HERE KASAB MADE CONFESSIONS DURING INTERROGATIONS.
NONE OF THE FACTS HAVE BEEN CONCOCTED BY ME, I HAVE JUST TRIED TO GIVE THE BIOGRAPHICAL HUE TO A PATHETIC OBNOXIUS LIFE.
THX :)

VENKY - THATS THE WHOLE POINT, HE NEVER REGRETTED ANYTHING AND ALWAYS REMAINED UNREPENTANT AND PROUD OF ALL THE HAVOC HE CREATED.

THEY ALL SHOULD BE HANGED WITH LIVE COVERAGE !
Posted by: Kanakrekha ChauhanOn: Friday, May 07, 2010 11:05:55 PM
Venkat even in Chtergee's case the crime was as henious as can be. Same with Nithari convicts Pandhar and koli or even Afzal.

While we all want kasab hanged and I wish the noose is tied a tad loose so t hat the realisation that he is going to die confronts him in his last moemnts.

But I question you, post-Kasab hanging what shd be the order of hanging? Which is more heinous crime.

Afzal guru- attack on the ind parliament
Pandhar and koli - who killed and even ate small kids !

I personally think, as heinous crimes go - nbithari takes the cake.
As egoistic crime goes, Afzal guru is more important than the others.

Kasab declared war on the country which he thought was justified.

LET US HANG ALL THREE OF THEM TOGETHER

Braj and Durgesh
There is no doubt whatsoever that he should get death - PERIOD. LI is too much of a bother and killing him in an encounter/pretext of an encounter would not have yielded any results/proofs against Pak.
AND TO HELL WITH HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION
We have suffered enuff, lost many lives to even doubt the good decision by the good justice Tehelyani

Hope the future fidayeens read this blog and understand that how they are exploited....
@Kanak...while reding this blog I was feeling that Kasab is confessing.Well done...
I heard Rs.35 crores spent already for this episode....and how much required to hang him...why not we spend tax prayers money to educate all those uneducate...not so called degree.... but value of humanity which they don't know or allowed to know.

Death penalty has always been a subject of debate. Human Rights activitists have been vigorously campaigning for India to join the 125+ countries who have banned death penalty. But majority of Indians are in favour of such sentences for acts of heinous crimes. I think Dhananjoy Chatterjee was the last person in our country to be hanged. And for a rape and murder committed by him in 1990, he faced death in 2004. Many serious crimes have taken place since then. So we cannot say that death sentence is being awarded as a matter of routine. For the magnitude of "sin" committed by him, Kasab deserved this punishment.

I wish the Supreme Court shows the same amount of seriousness (and same judgement !) in the thousands of such cases of rape / murder etc. lying before it.

But yes, Kasab's death is bound to be "glorified" to further the cause of Jihad.

The autobiography is too good and hope Kasab reads it !

kanak,Very interesting piece of writing.

Kasab might feel that he is very unlucky for having got caught alive.Had he been killed along with the other 9 terrorists in the encounter ,the truth about pakistan wouldnt have been exposed.

I feel death is a very easy escape for a dreaded terrorist like him.
Such a person should be kept alive and tortured till natural death traps him in its unescapable net.he should be made to realise what a unpardonable crime he has committed (every moment of his life)

But then the judge has rightly said that keeping such people alive is inturn a threat to the nation.I feel he has already enjoyed his extended life in the jail so far..And if at all he wanted to ,he would have realised the truth by now(and also his mistake) since one and half yrs is a long period.

He should be hanged as early as possible on the indo-pak border.
Posted by: Braj MohanOn: Friday, May 07, 2010 6:08:07 PM
I know that the terrorism is not going to end by the death sentense of Mohamed Ajmal Amir Kasab. Mohammed Kasad is merely a pawn, the root of terrorism is not easy to be finished.

But, there is need to respect the sacrifies and duties of Police Force, Armed Forces and Commandos of the dreadful days of 26th Nov to 29th Nov,2008.

Moreover, just imagine the condition of the Security Guards, who are guarding the terrorists in the Central Jails. Every moment of Duty hour is filled with the fear of Suspension order from service or attack by the terrorists. Further he high cost of security of these hard core terrorists are to be born by the Indian tax payers.

The death sentence of terrorist Kasab is right decision.

When A terrorist is feeling proud for his family, his country by killing innocent peoples ( at least 173 persons were killed and 308 persons wounded in Mumbai attack) taking it as Jihad.

Then why should a common man not feel proud by killing a Killer, that too after going though a necessary judicial process.

SHREE THANK YOU :)
AND ABSOLUTELY THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT -
HE SHOULD BE HANGED/SENT TO THE CHAIR/ GAS CHAMBER- ANYTHING THAT WILL SEND THE RIGHT SIGNAL TO THE TERRORISTS OF THE WORLD!

MAHESH AND JAY
VERY TRUE THESE BOYS CAUGHT IN YOUNG AGE ARE BRAINWASHED INTO ADOPTING VIOLENT LIFE STYLES. BUT THEN THIS TIME WE HVE NO CHOICE BUT TO SEND HIM TO THE GALLOWS.

SUBARNA
I FAIL TO UNDERSTAND THE ATTITUDE OF THE 'SO CALLED CIVIL' SOCIETY, THEY SHOULD EMPATHISE WITH THE PPL WHO LOST THEIR NEAR N DEAR ONES, OR PPL WHO LOST A LIMB -FOR THEY HAVE GONE THRO THIS IRAPARABLE LOSS. ITS ONLY THEM WHO WOULD EVER KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE 'ATLEAST' SENT HIM TO DEATH. FOR INSPITE OF THIS PUNISHMENT THEY WILL ALWAYS LIVE THE TRAUMA OF BEARING THEIR LOSS.

kanakji..once again congratulations for writing another to be-featured post!it has the necessary ammunition for that. yes .. we know he is a poor grass hopper which has fallen in street light. but for that execuse cant be given or forgiven for the heinous crime he has committed. as you have said , no meaning in keeping him alive as it may invite another kandahar type incident! we can only pity for innocent victims of terrorism!
Posted by: Subarna GhoshOn: Friday, May 07, 2010 2:57:51 PM
We are no in the shoes of those who were killed, we are not the ones who lost their parents or children or brother/sister or even a friend. But if I just try, try only a little bit to position myself in the place where they are - these talks of "civil society" etc. all seems so meaningless.
Kasav SHOULD BE HANGED TO DEATH. It's not personal. Even if this guy was 18 years old, he should have been hanged. Why should India have an impression of "Sadhu-Mahatma", who can forgive every sin and sinner? This should be symbolic. These terrorists anyhow come prepared for death, if U could shoot him during the encounter, why can't U sentence him death after the trial?
Indians have had enough of these attacks and enough display of mercy - now there should be the end.

Ashisji Thank you!

Have you read Chekov's The Bet? The question of LI and capital punishment has been discussed debated n hotly argued about and is yet to yield a result. Is a life wasted in prison - better? Or a life terminated? we can only fathom what is the best -or shd I say worst -remedy or cure.
And lastly it is irrelevant how many support or condemn your point of view - so long as we can appreciate the gravity of the situation.
THX for reading and commenting :)

MOST OF THE YOUNG TERRORISTS,DO NOT HAVE ANY IDEOLOGY.THEY JOIN THE CAMP FOR THE SAKE OF THEIR FAMILIES.THE ROOT CAUSE IS UNEMPLOYMENT WHICH IN TURN LEADS TO POVERTY.THE LEADERS SIMPLY BRAINWASH THEM.HE MUST BE PUNISHED.BUT IT SHOULD NOT BE DEATH SENTENCE.LATER ON HE MUST BE ABLE TO REALISE HIS MISTAKES.THE REAL CULPRITS SHOULD BE HANGED.IF COURT RELEASES HIM FREE,IT WILL SURELY ENCOURAGE MORE ATTACKS.WE SHOULDN'T FORGET THOSE WHOSE PARENTS OR RELATIVES WERE KILLED IN THOSE ATTACKS.

He’s the one among the lesser subordinates
who marched to the war front according to the plot
planned by the masterminds who are sitting secured,
far away from our country, may be planning a new plot. They require to be marked to be brought to book.ensuring, kasabs cant cross the roads.
We want our admin to keep our country settled
as one where no Kasab can conspire to intrude.

Sentencing kasab to death is not our triumph.
India must feel triumphant for conducting
a successful trial against not only Kasab….
but to the terrorism in general in a manner,
most lawful - possibly in a way the most transparent

Dolly first of all let me congratulate you for voicing your honest opinion, however diff it might be.
Secondly rest assured no one can call U anti-Indian as all of us here are educated matured ppl and we are aware of the power of a good debate originating out of independently thinking minds.

As for the quantam of punishment, I firmy believe that there can be nothing other than DEATH for him, even if its just a symbolic excercise, we need to do this for reinforcing the common man's faith in our ever sluggish sponge like judicial system.

Agreed ur logic abt Mum and coimbatore blast stands un challenged. The fact remains that if we keep him alive in prison, we will be spending crores for his ceurity and a Kandahar like situation can not be ruled out either.

He has been used and mis-used but then in greater view of things to come, he needs to go. I can not say I dont feel sorry for this naive silly young man and many others like him this side of the border too. And that is precisely the reason this article stems out of my perception of - what cd be Kasav's point of view.
Posted by: Ashis DasOn: Friday, May 07, 2010 12:17:19 PM
MD. KASAV IS NOT INNOCENT, MAY BE HE IS 21, INDIAN COURT RIGHTLY ANALYSED THAT, HE IS A KILLING MACHINE, AND MUST PUNISHED. BUT I BEING A HUMAN BEING CAN'NT SAY HE SHOULD HANGED, AFTER ALL CIVIL SOCIETY CAN'NT TAKE REVENGE IN FAVOUR OF MURDER AGAINST MURDER, DEATH PENALTY/HANGING CAN'NT STOP CRIME, IT SHOULD UPROOTED FROM THE SOCIETY. PURELY IT IS MY THINKING, HOPE MANY OF MY BMS WILL NOT SUPPORT THIS. THANKS KANAKJI.

Kanak u hv written this article in a different point of view. > Now I would like to analyse this in a different angle. Kasab is a young boy of say 21yrs old and I think his mental maturity will be very less at this age and he has been utilised by someone to achieve their target using his poverty and innocence and also in the name of religion. He is not a criminal by nature. I dont think he deserves death sentence. He must be punished and could be given life sentence. After all still we hv not punised criminals who hv indulged themselves in the Mumbai bomb blast and Coimbatore bomb blast where so many were killed. They are still awaiting judgement even after so many years I dont know how far people will agree with me and I m awaiting comments and anti comments. May be I wl be called as an anti Indian also by our BM friends!!!!!
